Animal Assisted Activities (AAA)

In our project, the leading activities are Dog Care using working border collies, Sheep Farming involving livestock and sheepdogs and the Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) with the ponies.

Dog -assisted-activities and Equine Facilitated Learning can have a huge positive impact on children and teenagers. Bonding with animals can bring so much happiness and joy as well as a sense of acceptance and self-esteem.

Animals don’t judge and love to spend time with people and it has a great effect on children’s well-being.

Sheep on another hand are great to work with. Understanding their behaviour and learning how to handle them as well as running a sheep farm is a great challenge for teenagers. Every task accomplished can bring great satisfaction and a sense of achievement that some teenagers don’t find in school. Getting tired and dirty and managing to get the work done is what some teenagers need to boost their self-esteem and allow them to do great things in the future, in the farming industry or not.

What is Animal Assisted Activities (AAA)

AAA are activities providing opportunities for motivation, education, or recreation to enhance quality of life through connection with an animal.

The most common animals used are dogs and horses. Animals don’t judge and are very good listeners to children. The animals used in those activities are also called “animal comfort” as they help children and people in general to be less anxious, happier and more engaging.

AAA shouldn’t be confused with Animal-Assisted-Therapy (AAT), which is a goal orientated session requiring therapeutic intervention delivered by a professional therapist.
